Local-First Privacy Posture
Encircle is designed to respect your workflow and screen privacy. We only capture the screen when you explicitly run a query. Your screenshot and search history are saved locally on your Mac.
1. Introduction
Welcome to Encircle. Encircle (“we”, “our”, or “us”) provides a native macOS utility that allows you to capture selected regions of your screen and ask queries using hosted artificial intelligence models.
We believe in absolute transparency about what data is collected, how it is processed, and where it is stored. This Privacy Policy describes our practices regarding the information we collect when you use the Encircle macOS application, our website, and related services.
2. Information We Process
In order to deliver the core functionality of Encircle, we process the following types of information:
- Screen Captures (Selected Regions): When you activate Encircle and draw a selection bounding box on your screen, we capture a screenshot of the screen. Only the screenshot is sent to our servers for processing. We do not record or monitor your screen in the background, nor do we store it on our servers or databases .
- Text Queries and Conversations: The questions or prompts you type into the floating HUD are processed along with the selected screen capture to compile the response.
- Account and Authentication Info: We use Clerk to manage user accounts, sign-ins, and session states. This includes details like your email address and basic profile identifiers.
- Subscription and Billing Details: Transaction records and billing subscriptions are managed securely via Dodo Payments. We do not store or process your raw credit card numbers.
- Web Analytics: We use PostHog to analyze general website usage patterns and optimize website performance.
3. Data Storage & Retention
Encircle adopts a local-first storage design to maximize privacy and control:
- Local History: Your screenshot captures, query history, and AI responses are stored directly on your Mac. They are not archived on our servers.
- In-Flight Processing: Screen selections and chat queries sent to our API proxy are kept in memory solely to complete the model completion request. We do not train models on your captured screenshots or query inputs, nor do we save them on our servers after the request is completed.
4. Third-Party Service Providers
We collaborate with select third-party services to handle authentication, billing, and hosted AI inference. These services process your data in compliance with standard security frameworks:
Provides secure identity verification, JWT generation, and account management tools.
Handles merchant records, checkout flows, and subscription state updates.
Inference endpoints (e.g. OpenAI, Openrouter) process your queries and image crops on demand.
Performs anonymous session tracking and performance diagnostics on our marketing site.
5. Security
We protect your data during transit using Industry-standard Transport Layer Security (TLS/HTTPS). All interactions with the hosted API require valid JSON Web Tokens (JWT) signed by our authentication provider (Clerk).
6. Your Rights and Choices
Because we store your data locally and use external industry-standard services:
- Local History: You can purge your history details or captured images directly inside the Encircle application interface at any time.
- Account Deletion: You can delete your account by contacting us or through your account portal. Doing so will permanently wipe your profile association from Clerk.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may revise this Privacy Policy periodically. If we make material adjustments, we will notify you by updating the last revised date at the top of this page or through app notifications.
